Description
Regulated Qualification | Distance Learning (Self-Study) | 12-18 Months (GLH:400, TQT: 1200)

The new Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (DiT) is aimed at learners working or up-skilling to work as a teacher in the Further Education sector. This is a comprehensive teaching qualification for educators working in colleges, independent training organisations, adult education, and work-based learning. It’s an alternative to a traditional university route, ideal for those already working within a teaching or training role.
It replaces the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, formerly known as DTLLS and can be used to gain QTLS status, if desired.
Work Placements
The candidate must source a work placement of at least 250 hours. At least 150 hours of this should be teaching practice. Of the 150 teaching hours, at least 100 hours must be in the candidate’s subject area. At least 80 of the 150 teaching hours must be in-person training, and at least 20 hours must be delivered online.
A second placement of at least 20 hours must also be completed; however, if a placement with a different provider is not possible, it can include teaching a different subject area with the same provider, or teaching in a different venue with the same provider.
The 20 hours at the second placement are not specified as teaching hours and can be used for professional practice. Professional practice includes activities such as team meetings, planning and provider-wide CPD sessions.
Teaching Observations
All candidates will undergo 10 observations. The majority should involve teaching groups of at least 10 learners. An observation report must be completed by a mentor or qualified observer in the workplace (e.g. holding a level 5 qualification or higher).
Each observation should be at least 45 minutes long. Up to two observations may be delivered remotely. One other session may also be observed remotely, but at least 7 observations should be conducted in person, of face-to-face delivery.
Mentors
In addition to support from the ATC Training tutor, candidates must have access to two workplace mentors. One should be familiar with the candidate’s field of study, and the other should be available to provide pastoral support.
Duration
You can complete this course at your own pace for up to 18 months, although it can be completed faster if required.
