The OPITO Train The Trainer Vocational Qualification is designed for trainers, instructors and subject matter experts who want to develop and demonstrate their training competence to an industry-recognised standard.
It is particularly suitable for new and existing trainers working within the energy sector and other operational industries who are responsible for delivering effective workplace training.
What will you learn?
The qualification combines underpinning knowledge of training and learning with the practical workplace evidence required to demonstrate competence as a trainer.
You will develop your understanding of the training cycle before applying your knowledge in practice. This includes planning and preparing training sessions, delivering engaging training, assessing learner performance, providing effective feedback and evaluating the effectiveness of training.
By completing the qualification, you will demonstrate both the knowledge and practical competence required to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate training effectively within the workplace.
Flexible online learning
The qualification is completed 100% online, allowing you to work through the required knowledge and practical evidence at a pace that fits around your work and other commitments.
Standard course enrolment includes 12 months of system access and tutor support. Extensions are available where additional time is required, allowing a maximum completion period of 18 months.
Units
Learners must successfully complete 2 mandatory units, with 24 credits:
- OGOS-SQ10: Train the Trainer Initial
- OGOS-SQ11: Train the Trainer Workplace Evidence

Assessments
Candidates will complete a combination of theory and practical assessments, including:
- 4 x written essays
- Carry out a learning needs analysis
- Carry out a risk assessment
- Create a scheme of work and session plans
- Create joining instructions and learning resources
- Deliver at least two sessions, with one observed.
- Produce an evaluation report
- Self-evaluation and reflection

The qualification equips learners with the essential knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to deliver safe, inclusive, compliant, and effective training aligned with organisational, regulatory, and industry requirements.
Pre-requisites
To enrol, candidates must:
- Be aged 16 or over
- Have access to at least one real learner in an operational workplace, as required for the Workplace Evidence Unit (OGOS-SQ11)
- Have suitable opportunities to plan, deliver, assess and evaluate training in a real workplace or appropriately justified simulated environment
- Have access to relevant organisational procedures and documentation, including risk assessments, training records and appropriate workplace technologies
- Have sufficient English language skills to understand the course content and complete all required assessment evidence in English
As practical training and workplace evidence are mandatory components of the qualification, candidates should ensure they can meet these requirements before enrolling.
Certificate
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a globally recognised OPITO qualification at SCQF Level 6.
