Using ELCAS Funding for Professional Qualifications

Leaving the Armed Forces or preparing for your next career while still serving often means finding a way to translate your military experience into qualifications that civilian employers recognise.

Military service develops valuable skills in leadership, communication, technical expertise, teamwork and problem-solving. However, some civilian roles also require or prefer candidates to hold recognised professional qualifications.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) Learning Credits schemes can help make professional development more affordable for eligible Armed Forces personnel and service leavers.

What Are MOD Learning Credits?

The MOD provides Learning Credits to support eligible Armed Forces personnel with personal and professional development.

The two main schemes are Standard Learning Credits (SLC) and Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC).

Standard Learning Credits (SLC)

Standard Learning Credits are designed to encourage ongoing learning and development throughout your military career.

SLC can contribute towards the cost of approved learning activities, helping serving personnel develop new knowledge, skills and qualifications.

Depending on current MOD rules and eligibility, SLC may provide:

  • Up to 80% of eligible course fees
  • A contribution of up to £175 per financial year
  • Support towards a range of approved learning activities
  • An accessible way to continue professional development while serving

Claims must be approved before purchasing the course by completing MOD Form 1950 and obtaining authorisation from line management and education staff. 

Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC)

The Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC) provides financial support towards eligible higher-level learning and nationally recognised qualifications.

For eligible learners, ELC funding can contribute towards the cost of approved courses delivered by an ELCAS Approved Learning Provider.

How to Apply for ELCAS Funding

  • 1. Choose your qualification(s)

    Start by identifying the qualification that best supports your career goals. Consider the type of civilian role you want to move into, the qualifications employers typically request and how your existing military experience could support your chosen career path.

  • 2. Check Eligibility

    Before applying, confirm that your chosen course is eligible under the ELCAS scheme. We can help you identify suitable qualifications and explain the available study options.

  • 3. Submit ELCAS Claim

    Submit your claim through the official ELCAS process in accordance with the current scheme requirements. Your claim should be submitted and approved before your course begins. Visit the ELCAS website to apply.

  • 4. Receive Your Claim Authorisation Note (CAN)

    Once your ELCAS application has been approved, you will receive a Claim Authorisation Note (CAN) confirming the approved funding. Once you receive it, forward us a copy of the note.

  • 5. Pay Your Personal Contribution

    Learners are normally required to make a 20% personal contribution towards the course cost, with ELC funding contributing towards the remaining 80% balance. ATC Training will issue a payment link for your contribution after receiving the CAN.

  • 6. Start Your Course

    Once the CAN has been issued and your 20% contribution paid, course access will be issued and you can begin working towards your qualification.

Qualifications Available for ELCAS Funding

The best qualification will depend on your existing experience and what you plan to do after leaving the Armed Forces.

If your military career has involved delivering instruction, training personnel, assessing, or developing others, a teaching, training, assessor or IQA qualification can provide civilian recognition of those skills.
