IQA Qualifications Explained: Which One Is Right for Me?

Are you thinking of becoming an IQA, or do you already manage and monitor the quality of training and assessments in your organisation?

The right Level 4 IQA qualification depends on your role, your responsibilities, and whether you’ll be actively quality assuring assessments.

In this guide, we’ll explain the three IQA qualifications, what each one involves, and how to choose the best option for your situation.

What is an IQA Qualification?

IQA stands for Internal Quality Assurance. It is also referred to as Internal Verification.

An IQA (or IV) is responsible for:

IQA qualifications are Ofqual-regulated Level 4 qualifications, designed for those working within training providers, colleges, or workplace learning environments.

What Does an Internal Quality Assurer Do?

An Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) ensures that assessment processes are fair, consistent, and meet recognised standards.

Typical responsibilities include:

In many organisations, IQAs play a key role in maintaining the overall quality of training and assessment delivery.

Level 4 IQA Qualifications Explained

Choosing the right IQA course depends on whether you need knowledge only, practical IQA responsibilities, or leadership responsibilities.

Here’s a clear breakdown:

Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices (RQF)

This is a theory-only IQA qualification.

It covers the principles and practices of internal quality assurance but does not qualify you to carry out IQA activities.

It’s ideal for those who need to demonstrate knowledge of IQA but won’t actively quality-assure, or don’t yet have access to complete practical units.

👉 Best for:

  • Administrators
  • Support staff
  • Those preparing to move into an IQA role

It can also be upgraded later to a full IQA qualification if your role changes.

This is the standard IQA qualification and the most common choice.

It qualifies you to carry out internal quality assurance activities, such as monitoring assessors and maintaining assessment standards within an organisation.

This qualification is suitable for those responsible for maintaining the quality of assessment in a training provider or workplace setting .

👉 Best for:

  • Qualified assessors progressing into IQA roles
  • Training centre or college staff responsible for quality assurance
  • Workplace Training Managers

This is the Lead IQA qualification.

It includes everything in the standard IQA course, plus additional units focused on leading a team and managing quality assurance processes.

It covers planning, allocating, and monitoring IQA work, making it ideal for leadership roles.

👉 Best for:

  • Lead IQAs
  • Senior Training Managers
  • Training Centre Managers

Pre-requisites

IQA is a popular progression route if you already hold a recognised assessor qualification, although it is not a mandatory requirement to enrol.

If you don’t already have an assessor qualification, it is, however, recommended that you also complete the basic assessor qualification to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of assessment principles and practices.

Candidates must be able to access the internet and submit written work in English.

For the standard IQA qualification, you must have access to carry out quality assurance activities on two trainers/assessors.

For the lead IQA qualification, you must also be able to demonstrate managing and monitoring a team of IQAs.

So, Which IQA Qualification Is Right for Me?

Choosing the right course comes down to your current role and responsibilities:

If you’re unsure, the AIQA (standard IQA qualification) is often the best starting point for most assessors moving into quality assurance. You must be able to perform quality assurance activities on at least two assessors to complete the practical unit.
